Historic Downtown Tappahannock is helping one of Virginia’s most historic downtowns imagine what comes next. Set along the Rappahannock River, Tappahannock’s downtown district holds deep history, local character, and significant opportunity. With 14 buildings dating back to the 18th century and a place on the National Register of Historic Places, the downtown reflects generations of community life, commerce, and connection.
For nearly 50 years, the Albemarle Housing Improvement Program (AHIP) has worked to preserve safe, affordable homeownership for families across Charlottesville and Albemarle County. Through critical home repairs, AHIP helps residents remain safely housed, maintain stability, and stay connected to the communities they call home. But as housing challenges grow more complex and community needs continue to rise, AHIP recognized that sustaining this work for the future would require more than strong services alone — it would require investing in the long-term strength and sustainability of the organization itself.
In April 2025, VCDC celebrated the opening of Woods George Apartments in Philippi, West Virginia. Led by Woodlands Development and Lending, the project transforms a historic downtown building in Philippi from neglect into high-quality affordable homes with a first-floor storefront. This adaptive reuse effort brings new life to a building with deep roots in the community while also helping meet the need for rental housing and economic revitalization in Philippi, where poverty remains high.
VCDC is proud to be a partner on the Hotel Thelma revitalization project in Bluefield, WV, celebrating the project’s groundbreaking ceremony in February. Lead by Bluefield Arts and Revitalization Corporation (BARC), this project preserves historic Hotel Thelma, a former Green Book property, creating 10 new affordable apartments in the city's historic Black community for the first time in decades.
NOON Hioaks Phase II is a newly constructed affordable housing development in Southwest Richmond creating high-quality, affordable homes for low-income families. This 151-unit building, featuring two- and three-bedroom units, is part of the innovative 8-acre NOON Hioaks Community which currently offers 218 multifamily units in the Phase I property.
