Freedom Lane
Project Impact
Freedom Lane, a community of Permanent Supportive Housing in Wytheville for homeless and disabled veterans, is the first of its kind in Southwest Virginia. This new construction sits on a portion of an eight-acre site of rolling meadow, with mature oak trees scattered throughout. Freedom Lane consists of 24 fully accessible one- and two-bedroom garden apartments and a community building where residents can connect with their neighbors and access a comprehensive array of services that have been coordinated on their behalf.
Wytheville, located in Southwest Virginia, is known for its stunning scenery in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. In 2015, developers at Wytheville Redevelopment and Housing Authority realized the great need for better, affordable housing for low-income and disabled veterans, and took the opportunity to help those veterans achieve the American Dream by creating Freedom Lane.
Freedom Lane is designed to offer Permanent Supportive Housing (PSH) for residents. PSH ensures that formerly homeless individuals and those making a very low income do not just have a place to call home, but also have permanent access to supportive services to maintain housing stability.
A variety of amenities are adjacent to Freedom Lane, including the Wytheville Community Center, Wytheville Community College, and the community-based Outpatient Clinic of Veterans Administration Hospital in Salem. Additionally, the property lies almost equidistant between two VA Hospitals: Salem and Mountain Home. The location is also close to restaurants, retail, churches, grocery stores, and a bus transit stop.
Freedom Lane meets VHDA’s Universal Design standards for accessibility as well as EarthCraft green building and energy efficiency standards.
Through the Housing Equity Fund of Virginia XIX, L.L.C., VCDC provided over $3.8 million in LIHTC equity investment. Freedom Lane is VCDC’s fourth investment in properties developed by WRHA.
