May 2022 - Poplar Creek Homes is a community located in South Boston, VA that provides 32 newly built homes for families and individuals making well below the average income in the area. Poplar Creek Homes includes one, two, and three-bedroom apartments in 16 duplex-style buildings, which all include front porches, patios, and 2-car driveways. Five homes in this community are designed for residents with disabilities. Poplar Creek Homes is committed to creating these homes for South Boston residents due to the high demand for more affordable homes in rural areas like Southside Virginia.
Poplar Creek Homes is located near retail areas, police and fire stations, parks, pharmacies, schools, banks, a bus service, and a hospital, providing residents with everything they need to thrive in their new neighborhood. Amenities at Poplar Creek Homes include 16 Hardie plank sided buildings constructed for energy efficiency, as well as high-quality cabinets, countertops and flooring. The development of Poplar Creek Homes is the result of a collaboration between Southside Outreach Group (SSOG), the Town of South Boston, and other community stakeholders. SSOG is the primary developer of Poplar Creek Homes, responsible for long-term operations and services. The Town of South Boston donated the land needed for the new development and implemented infrastructure improvements.
VCDC invested $5,446,339 for Poplar Creek Homes through Housing Equity Fund of Virginia 23. Additionally, VCDC’s lending affiliate, VCDF, provided a vital loan of $200,000 to assist with construction and development of Poplar Creek Homes. VCDC partnered with Southside Outreach Group (SSOG) on Poplar Creek Homes to provide development consulting services including tax credit application planning and preparing the property for investment. SSOG has played a vital role in providing housing services to individuals in Southside Virginia since 1995. VCDC partnered with SSOG for the first time in 2016 to assist in developing a renovated affordable housing community called Miller Homes across the street from Poplar Creek Homes. SSOG is known for its expertise in providing housing programs to assist low-income individuals and families.
