Affordable and Accessible Homes: Honoring Disability Pride Month
This July, we are celebrating Disability Pride Month in honor of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) being signed into law on July 26th, 1990.
Across the United States, around 12% of individuals over the age of 15 live with a disability (or 32 million households) according to the Urban Institute. The median income for households with a disabled member is only $42,736, while the median income for households without a disabled member is $75,000. There are over 18 million people with disabilities in the US who qualify for federal assistance with housing but are not receiving it. The high need for affordable and accessible housing is apparent not just nationwide, but across our service area, too. Our partners at Rush Homes, who specialize in creating accessible homes in the Lynchburg, VA region, have over 347 families on their waiting list.
As a part of our mission to create vibrant homes in thriving neighborhoods for all, we are committed to working with our partners create homes that individuals with disabilities are proud to live in. Over the years, we have worked with partners to help create 19 communities that prioritize accessibility and comfort for individuals with disabilities in need of affordable housing.
To honor this month, we are highlighting some of the communities in our portfolio that are designed to make homes affordable and highly accessible.
